I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.
Henry David Thoreau
I LOVE this song so much. I cannot describe why exactly, but it enthralls me. The way in which it is sung, the atmosphere it evokes, just gives me goosebumps. Enjoy! Love, L.

Ever since I was very small, about three or four years old, I have been listening a lot to Radio Klara, a Belgian radio broadcasting station for (mostly) classical music. Sometime ago now, when I was still very dazed and poorly because of my concussion, listening to Radio Klara, I discovered the song 'Miri it is' and I fell in love with it immediately! It soothed my terrible headache and nausea like no other and helped me fall asleep. Not because it was so sleep inducing though. No, in the least not. On the contrary, it was enthralling! It made me happy and dreamy. Now that I've been better, I've also had the chance to think a bit about it (thinking clearly was impossible when I had my heavy concussion). As you might already know, I love languages and the sounds of the lyrics carry me away to a bygone era, wondering about how our modern languages might have formed out of this medieval language. The language used in 'Miri it is' namely reminds me of the oldest known poem in dutch 'Hebban Olla Vogala': In modern dutch this is said to become: ‘Hebben alle vogels nesten begonnen behalve ik en jij; wat wachten we nu?’, in English: All the other birds already have started building their nests, what are we waiting for then? The first YouTube-link below contains lyrics, that way, you might be able to see why it made me wonder and it might get you to wonder too. While I sadly enough could not find the amazingly beautiful version by Zefiro Torna on YouTube, I will add a few YouTube links of 'Miri it is' anyway so you can get a bit of a foretaste of what it sounds like. Nonetheless, to me, the Zefiro Torna version is infinitely better still. If you come across it anywhere and you, like me, like this kind of music too, I really recommend you to give it a listen to! I do not like all of them as much, but since you might have a different taste than I, I've added quite a few versions as they are all vastly different in my opinion. Enjoy! Love, L. When I was 9, I went 'on weekend' with the scouts. It was not just your regular weekend though, no, it was a Halloween weekend. Going on weekend traditionally meant that we had to take part in a night-play called 'follow-the-fil'. Follow-the-fil is a game that usually is played in the woods when it's after dark. A rope has been wrapped around the trees all around the woods and you have to follow it until it stops. Then you should normally have reached your destination, ie the camp they have set up in the woods. Generally, there is no light to guide you, so the only thing you can do is go ahead and hold on tight to the rope with all the courage you can muster. Now you have to know that follow-the-fil in itself can be scary enough, but because it was a Halloween weekend, our scout leaders had given it their all to make the atmosphere as mesmerizing and spooky as they could manage. We had to go into the assembly room where they first told us a scary story about how the woods near our camping place had been haunted for centuries by the ghost of a murdered Lady. While they were telling us the story, they slowly had dimmed the lights and after awhile, we noticed that our faces were lit by a gazillion candles. They had already been lit before we entered the room, but because of the TL-lights above us that were alight before, we hadn't noticed. When the story was at it's end, our scouters asked us to remain silent for one minute. After that minute we started to feel a bit weary, but they asked us to remain seated and listen to a song. The song they then put on captured me immediately. It was simply divine to me. To me, I guess it had the opposite effect of what they were trying to pull off. It soothed me and cradled me. I felt dreamy and heavenly embraced. It was the first song of the album 'Canto Gregoriano' by the Benedictan monks of Silos. Ever since I have loved this music. It gives me so much peace. I still listen to it from time to time and it still gives me the same goosebumps as back then. :-) The second YouTube link is Gregorian chant by nuns, which in my opinion is also beautiful, although I have to confess that I like Canto Gregoriano best. As I love Halloween, I wanted to share this music with you,for I hope that to you it might also be the great discovery/present it has been for me that one Halloween weekend. Enjoy and Happy Halloween! Love, L. A dreamy piece of wonderfully beautiful instrumental jazz. Perfect for a summery Friday's eve, or any other evening for that matter. It's an evergreen <3 Enjoy! Love, L. This is a song I really like. I discovered it when watching the original version of Wallander, a Swedish detective series. It's the theme song of one of Wallander's seasons. The way it is sung and its lyrics both make it so touching that it lingers even when it's no longer playing. In a way it both radiates a vibe of hope and lays a soothing layer on your soul when you most need its comforting. Next to that, it also always makes me long for Norden (i.e. Scandinavia), which is not even that weird if you think that it is sung by Ane Brun, a Norwegian singer. I placed the lyrics underneath the song in case you'd like to read them (I always do ( : ) Enjoy! Lyrics: When there's so much darkness closing in
Just swerve around slowly You'll find an opening. A light will appear like an animal between the trees There you'll find your pocket of peace Make a perfect circle, it's all around you Put your mark on the map anywhere or nowhere It's up to you it's not too late to find an opening Trace a track until you find the end There's a clearing in every forest, at least one for every man The light will appear like an animal between the trees There you'll find your pocket of peace Make a perfect circle it's all around you You know that everything lingers for you to follow through ||: It's up to you It's not too late to find an opening do you wanna rediscover or do want it all to be over do you want to see the meaning of the circleing? In this blogpost I would like to share the beautiful song 'Try' by Colbie Caillat with you all. I recently discovered it and I just love the lyrics of this song! as it states that inner beauty is the most valid and that you are perfect and lovable just the way you are as long as you're a good person. I found two great versions of this song on Youtube, one because of the lyrics, and one because it is very well encompassing the meaning of this song. with lyrics: I found a second video on Youtube, in which, in my opinion, the Disney princesses perfectly depict how insecure we can be and sometimes are made because of others, it is, until 3:39 (where Tinkerbell says 'I love myself'). After that, it becomes really, really weird, seriously (in my opinion!). I have no way of editing that part out alas, but I can say here that I do not like the ending part of the video and that I in no way associate with it : ) I still wanted to share it with you all though, as I think the first part (until 3:39) is lovely, and as for the latter part of it, it is only my opinion and each is free to make up one's own mind! This song is about women, but I'd like to dedicate this blog post to all of you! We are all wonder people, every one of us, not only those amongst us that see themselves as women by gender! Now, some of you might be surprised why I would write this here, but more on that (gender neutral language) in an upcoming blogpost! If you are kind you are always beautiful. Your inner beauty shows true. It's what makes a person beautiful. After all:
At the bottom of this post, you can find two versions of a very merry song I heard on the radio this morning! The first is an all male choir. The second is a mixed choir. The version I heard and found to be prettiest was by jennifer Larmore, but sadly I could not find her version. These are the lyrics: Aaron Copland – Ching-a-ring Chaw Lyrics Ching-a-ring-a ring ching ching, Ho a ding-a-ding kum larkee, Ching-a-ring-a ring ching ching, Ho a ding kum larkee. Brothers gather round, Listen to this story, 'Bout the promised land, An' the promised glory. You don't need to fear, If you have no money, You don't need none there, To buy you milk and honey. There you'll ride in style, Coach with four white horses, There the evenin' meal, Has one two three four courses. Ching-a-ring-a ring ching ching, Ho a ding-a-ding kum larkee, Ching-a-ring-a ring, Ho a ding kum larkee. Nights we all will dance To the harp and fiddle, Waltz and jig and prance, "And Cast off down the middle!" When the mornin' come, All in grand and splendour, Stand out in the sun, And hear the holy thunder! Brothers hear me out, The promised land's a-comin' Dance and sing and shout, I hear them harps a strummin'. Ching-a-ring-a ching Ching ching, ching a ring ching Ching-a-ring-a ching ching, Ching-a-ring-a ching ching, Ching-a-ring-a, Ching-a-ring-a, Ching-a-ring-a, Ring, ching ching ching chaw! |
