and although he is short-haired, he loses a lot! of hair. He is an indoors cat as well since he's got an unspecified food allergy, which means he will shed all of his hair in our home as well. It's quite the job to get it all removed from furniture and clothes, and it takes up so much time because I'm so busy already, but I just have to do it for otherwise, I'd just feel untidy the whole time :O
Up till now, I have always been using a lint roller. You know the kind you can buy at Ikea that has an adhesive side to which all the hair sticks and if it's completely full, you pull it off and just throw it away.
To someone who is trying to live as ecologically sustainable as possible like me, it really was a constant struggle between on one side wanting to have a clean house and clean clothes and on the other producing a ton of waste of used lint-roller paper. You may now feel like I overreact just a tad here in saying 'a ton of waste', but, really, I am not. I could easily go with one entire lint roll for just my duvet cover alone (yes my cat sleeps on my bed : ) He can open the doors in our home himself so it's not an option to keep him out and in addition he also meows a lot if he is left alone at night. He is soooo sweet and so cute so it's fine by me :D)
All the waste these throw-away lint rollers were producing and the money they were consuming thus just drove me crazy! I was desperate for an adequate solution, but I had no clue of what that solution could be! Until...
while I was in a store where they sell a lot of random house decorations and household supplies, Blokker for the dutch-speaking amongst you, desperately looking for a round cardboard box to store my cloth pads in (but not finding one :'( they're so hard to find :O),
I found this hanging in a rack:
It is very simple to use, relatively cheap in purchase, €10, it lasts a long time and best of all: the only waste it produces is the lint and the hair you remove with it!
How it works? You just brush with it on your clothes (not if they're woollen!!) in the direction of the arrow that is on its handle until it is full. When it is full, you can remove the hair and lint by brushing the area with your fingers in the same direction of the arrows. You will see the lint and hair now forming a ball and you can take it off. It is that simple :D (and waste free!!! Yay again :D)
That being said, I remembered we had one at home when I was really little, but my mum was not too fond of it (perhaps because my dad used it and he was not the nicest person you know) and she threw it out, so I never got the chance to try it myself. I therefore was not sure if it would work and if I wanted to spend so much money on something I might use just once. I also totally forgot calling my mum to ask her what her opinion was on the reusable lint roller, aka clothes brush. Typical :p!
I thus planned to buy it after having slept a night on it, just to make sure it wasn't an impulse purchase and it would be worth the €10 it costs :)
Today, I discovered that my beloved furry friend was losing a ton of hair on my clothes as well as my duvet cover again and I'd really had it. You can see the hair on my clothes, but can't always see it on my duvet cover because it is a light-coloured one. That just frightens me, cause that way, my cat's hair can build up a hairball without me even knowing it is there! That's not very nice, or healthy!, so I had made up my mind. I just had to give that reusable lint remover a go! Today I thus got one and immediately tested it out. This is what happened:
Thus, if you happen to need something to remove lint and animal hair and you want to consider using something environment-friendly which as a bonus also will save you a ton of money in the long run, I'd say you really have to give the reusable lint roller a go. You will be happily surprised!
